What is the RNLI?

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a registered charity that saves lives at sea.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is a registered charity that saves lives at sea. It provides, on call, the 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue service to 100 miles out from the coast of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, and a beach lifeguard service on 57 beaches in the south west of England. The RNLI continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for its income.

There are 232 lifeboat stations strategically placed around the UK and Republic of Ireland.

The first lifeboat arrived at Cullercoats in 1852 and over the last 153 years, the many boats that have served the station have saved in excess of 900 lives. For more information on Cullercoats Lifeboat visit the other about us sections.

Lifeboat Crew
Lifeboatmen and women are volunteers. There are more than 4,600 volunteer crew members throughout the country, including over 300 women.

Cullercoats Lifeboat currently has 22 voluntary crew members - including 5 helmsmen, 19 crew and 3 trainees.

Costs
But saving lives comes at a cost, and every day it costs the RNLI over £300.000 to run the UK'S lifeboat service, every penny of which comes from voluntary contributions.

The direct costs of launching a lifeboat are relatively small (service payments and fuel). But if all the other running costs of a lifeboat station are taken into account - ie; stores, maintenance of lifeboats and lifeboat stations - the average cost of launching Cullercoats Lifeboat is about £2,200. These figures do not include the substantial cost of depreciation of the lifeboat.

It costs over £1,600 to kit out each crewmember. An all-weather lifeboat cost £2,000,000, and an inshore lifeboat costs about £25,000.

Raising the money
For every £1 spent, 80 pence is spent on maintaining and replacing the existing fleet 17 pence is used for fundraising and 3 pence for administration.

RNLI Fundraising takes a variety of approaches to appeal to everyone with an interest in raising money for the lifeboats.
