Cullercoats Bay itself is a semicircular beach with cliffs and caves
at the centre and ramped access at the north and south
sides which are totally isolated from each other at high tide.
The
lifeboat station- is located just south of Whitley Bay and
North of Tynemouth. Longsands beach is in the centre, a
popular surfing location.
The
village of Cullercoats itself was once a shipping port
for salt and coal, both produced locally. The salt industry
went into decline and coal shipments were located to better
harbours with the advent of the railways in the
mid-nineteenth century.
However,
fishing took over, later in the nineteenth
century and two piers were built at the entrance to the
harbour to provide shelter for over 150 cobles.
The Coble is an open top fishing boat, that were built
in the North East (for more information see our coble page).
But
Cullercoats fishing industry also declined over the year's
and now there are only a couple of boats fishing
from Cullercoats Harbour. |
