Cullercoats Harbour Day 2005 - for the first time in history
the Cullercoats Harbour Day was unable to go ahead on Cullercoats
Beach, due to atrocious weather conditions.
But
that didn't stop the crew and organisers from improvising
in the most creative and successful ways.
It
was decided just a couple of hours before the event was to
begin, that it should be moved up to Cullercoats Community
Center. And crew and helpers were quick to shift all the stalls,
chairs and tables and even the boat and tractor from the beach
up to the Community Center, where a much reduced but still
incredibly successful Harbour Day was held.
The
regular stalls and live music was able to proceed, under the
cover of the Community Center. And despite the loss of the
helicopter and TVLB display, the Cullercoats Lifeboat crew
were able to perform a small display in the harbour later
in the afternoon.
Some
of the crew visited local pubs and clubs with their collection
buckets to help raise funds. We were unable to run the usual
coconut shy and assault course, but the crew implemented a
sponsored soaking - for a donation you could throw buckets
of water at the crew. This went down well with the visitors
- who still showed up in their hundreds, and thanks to their
dedication and the crew and organisers quick thinking we were
able to raise over £6500.00 from the event.
